OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Certification
Your safety is our number one goal
OSHA statistics show that every year employees from all kinds of industries are being injured through accidents. These accidents can be prevented with little basic training in health and safety matters. Training employees in health and safety matters in the workplace may seem to be time consuming and expensive but investing in your workforce and their safety is an important outlay.
The OSHA 10-hour General Industry Certification provides entry level workers a wide course range. The courses cover topics such as employee rights, employer responsibilities and complaint filing. Workers will learn to detect, abate and prevent hazards on a job site. The certification requires 10 hours total in a classroom setting. Outlined below are the specific 10-hour certification requirements.
This training requires an initial “Introduction to OSHA” class that lasts 1 hour. This class provides OSHA’s history and emphasizes its mission. Participants will learn about workers’ resources and job site standards. After that, the next 1-hour course focuses on walking and working surfaces. This class includes fall protection training.
The third 1-hour section is on Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans and Fire Prevention Plans and Fire Protection. Next, the instructor will review Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for 1 hour. There is then a 1-hour class on Hazard Communication and a 1-hour class on Electric safety.
10 Hour General Industry Elective Topics
The instructor will present on elective topics for 2 hours. The instructor must cover at least 2 topics, and will spend at least 30 minutes on each. Possible elective topics include Hazardous Materials, Materials Handling, Machine Guarding and Introduction to Industrial Hygiene. Other options are Bloodborne Pathogens, Ergonomics, Safety and Health Programs and Fall Protection. Elective topics vary on what employers and employees need.
In the course’s final 2 hours, instructors have two options. They can review other general industry hazards and policies, or expand upon the previously covered topics. The minimum length of any topic is 30 minutes. After this final course, workers will receive, from the Department of Labor, in about 4 weeks, the OSHA 10-hour General Industry wallet size card.
